Exclamation Guide to the Lucky Fishing Hat and such.

I've been asked A LOT of questions about where and how I got my Lucky Fishing Hat, and have seen quite a good amount of questions regarding the fishing tourney, so I've decided to make a little guide for the 19 twink community.

---------------

A few things about the STV Fishing Tourney
First off, I guess I'll explain a bit about the Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza. The main objective of the tourney is to get 40 [Speckled Tastyfish] and turn them in before anybody else. As a level 19 twink, your objective is to get the [Lucky Fishing Hat], and, if desired, [Nat Pagle's Extreme Anglin' Boots]. To get these, you need to catch rare fish, which are fished from pools of tastyfish that spawn along the coast of STV during the tournament.

Here's Blizzard's little story about the Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza, if you feel like reading it: http://worldofwarcraft.com/info/events/fishing/

When: Every Sunday (2:00-4:00PM Server Time)
Where: Along the coast of Stranglethorn Vale
Rewards: Since this is a guide for 19 twinks, I'm just going to bother with the rare fish. To get the following rewards, you need to get ONE of the type of fish shown next to the item.
[Keefer's Angelfish] = [Lucky Fishing Hat]
[Brownell's Blue Striped Racer] = [Nat Pagle's Extreme Anglin' Boots]
[Dezian Queenfish] = [High Test Eternium Fishing Line]
How: Keep reading

---------------

Step 1: Gathering supplies
This will give you the fishing you need to guarentee that you won't be letting any fish get away.*

In case you're a person that enjoys making it a point to twink out every aspect of your twink, here's a list of gear that would give you the most fishing possible at 19:This gives a total of 367 Fishing!

*225 fishing skill is needed to guarentee a catch every cast. [Thanks Cowblackout]

**As of patch 2.4, [Expert Fishing - The Bass and You] no longer requires level 20 to use, making a 225 base fishing skill possible.

***Aquadynamic Fish Attractors are created by engineers (150 Engineering is required to make them, and the schematics are taught by a trainer). The mats don't cost much, and they are the best lures out there. If you don't want to make the Aquadynamic Fish Attractors, [Sharpened Fish Hook]s also give +100 fishing for 10 minutes, and are obtained by doing the fishing dailies outside of Shattrath.

Step 2: FISH!
As a 19 twink, one can only assume that your objective is to get the Lucky Fishing Hat, and possibly the boots, too. Well, there are three ways of doing the fishing tourney at 19.
  1. Up/Down the coast with a guard
  2. Up/Down the coast without a guard
  3. Yojamba Isle

1. Up/Down the coast with a guard. This is pretty straight forward, just have a high level escort you up and down the coast while you look for pools and fish. If you have an escort that you know won't let you die, this is probably the best way to go.

2. Up/Down the coast without a guard. On the east coast there is a nice path where a level 19 twink can safely fish without having to worry too much about mobs killing them. I have linked a map of the path below, courtesy of Fierlissa. Also, if you do happen to die, you are very close to the graveyard in comparison to almost any other fishing areas.

3. Yojamba Isle. No guard? No problem. Not too many know of this island, and some that do don't go because they believe that the trolls there are aggressive. In fact, this is the island where the Zandalar Tribe resides. They're the guys you get faction with for doing Zul'Gurub, which are neutral, and to top it off, there are NO mobs at this island, so you don't need to worry about dying (unless of course you drown yourself). The only downside of this island is that there aren't too many pools that spawn. The easiest and safest way for Alliance to get to the island is by swimming down from the western coast of Westfall. Unfortunately for Horde it's a bit more time consuming, but you would take the zeppelin from the Undercity to Grom'gol Base Camp. Whenyou board the zeppelin, go down under the deck and get to the balcony/ledge right next to the propellors. As soon as you zone in from the map screen, jump off the zeppelin and into the water. Swim north to Yojambo Island. [Thanks to TwoGlassEyes for directions] Here is a map of the fishing pools that I'm aware of: (I haven't fished at a tourney in a few months, so if there are anymore you're aware of, other than the glitched few, let me know so I can add them)

[Thanks DirkDiggla for an updated map]

If you'd like to try out all of the different spots, here's a link to all of the pool spawns. [Thanks to Gigatech for giving the link]

I would also recommend buying a [Weather-Beaten Journal] to be able to track tastyfish pools on your minimap.

---------------

Step 3: Enjoy your new items!
Once you get a rare fish, you must turn it in to the Fishbot 5000 located in Booty Bay. Hopefully you get your new hat and/or boots in your first week, but if not, just keep at it! Fishing is all about patience, so good luck all of you impatient people!

OH! Before I forget, after the tourney ends, you can turn in your [Speckled Tastyfish] to Jang the Fishing Apprentice (located next to the Fishbot and such in Booty Bay). It is a repeatable quest called Apprentice Angler, and for every 5 [Speckled Tastyfish] you turn in, you get 1s 50c.* It's not much, but at least your still getting some money for your attempt at the hat/boots. The fishing tournament NPCs despawn an hour after the tourney ends, so don't wait too long!

Also, [Speckled Tastyfish] disappear from your bags within a few hours, so be sure to turn them in!

Unlike [Speckled Tastyfish], the rare fish will NOT disappear from your bags, but you will have to wait until the next fishing tournament to turn them in for your reward.

*This is the reward at level 19. The higher level you are, the more money you get per 5 tastyfish. This was changed from a flat 23 silver per 5 fish.

FAQ
  • Where do I fish [Speckled Tastyfish]? You fish them from Pools of Speckled Tastyfish in Stranglethorn Vale during the fishing tournament.
  • Do I need to talk to somebody for the Pools of Speckled Tastyfish to spawn? No, the pools automatically spawn when the fishing tournament starts. The fishing tournament is from 2-4pm server time. All of the pools despawn at 4pm.
  • What is the max level of fishing a 19 twink can get up to? 367 Fishing, the gear is listed above in Step 1. Or 225 without any gear or special fishing poles.
  • What time can you catch the rare fish? Sundays, 2-4PM Server Time
  • Do tastyfish pools spawn on Yojamba Isle? Yes, I used to fish there quite often during the tourneys. There is a map of the fishing nodes in Step 2 of the guide.
  • Does turning in fish give you exp? No, you do not get experience for turning in either tastyfish or any of the rare fish.
  • Where can I fish to 150 fishing? I would recommend fishing in either Orgrimmar or Stormwind. You can level from 1-150 in both places quite easily, and if you really wanted to, you could fish between battlegrounds!
  • Since the rare fish are BoP and Uncommon, is it possible to group with somebody who isn't going for the hat/boots and roll on the fish? No, only the person who caught the fish is able to roll on it.
  • I was told that only one of each rare fish can be caught per server per contest, is this true? No, not at all. In fact, my first fishing tournament, I was fishing with my brother and we both got our hats (lucky, I know), and even today, there are guilds that are having multiple people get their hats and boots at the same contest.
  • Do I need to accept any quests to catch the rare fish? No, you can catch the rare fish without a quest.
  • If your lure runs out while you're fishing, do you still get the fishing bonus to that cast? Yes, you will still get the bonus to that cast and catch the fish normally. [Thanks Sleethe]
  • As of patch 2.1, Blizzard made it so that you are guarenteed a fish will bite by the end of the cast, but I've had casts where I never got a bite. What gives? In this patch, they changed fishing so that many of the fish you catch will happen at the end of your 20 second casting timer. If you wait until the fish jumps in the water and the sound plays to click on your bobber, you will probably not catch the fish. This is due to the small bit of lag between your computer and the server. So, to catch these fish simply click on the bobber everytime your timer goes down to 1 second, even if there's no fish jumping or sounds. You will catch a fish because Blizzard was nice enough to guarentee a bite every cast in the patch. [Thanks Sleethe]

If I missed anything, or anybody would like anything added, just post here, and I'll be happy to throw it into this guide (with credit given, of course).

Hope this helps!
