Going for my 17th week, I usually catch 80-120 fish. Never caught any rare fish, ever.

Well i dont mean to brag or anything but on my 1 and only fishing contest i got 2 pairs of the boots within 20 minutes and then within an hour I got the hat. lol i must be really lucky

thanks merovingian, and yea, tantalus you seem to have gotten pretty lucky there haha. i got my hat within 20min of my first tourney, 4 tourneys without the boots (it's hard for me to make it on sundays /cry)

once again, i couldn't get to the tourney  i could always use a queenfish, my only 2 rare fish were keefer's.. but.. i guess that's kinda lucky

Does anyone know how much experience you gain by getting to STV and the areas in it? I have ~3k until ding and I'd really like to go for the hat (although some people have vowed to gank me the whole time ).

Get a summon to booty bay, you'll be fine. you just get a lot less fishing room.

get summon to east coast of STV, you will get ~500 XP for discovering there and there is some quite much fish. if you will discover all it will be too much imho. and discovering on west coast is unpredictable.

While my 60 is getting restored, I went there on my lvl 10 to start discovering everything, and I got ~100xp per discovery, that was going from duskwood to booty bay, just along the road, then going to yojamba isle.
If I remembery correctly, that was about 1 or 2 bars on my lvl 10, so you should be fine at 19.
